SIX

Logan and I returned to work, and at the end of the day we went home to cook dinner for Eric.

I quietly maneuvered around the kitchen, my mind on everything that had occurred the previous days.

"Maya, are you well?" Logan asked.

"Yeah. I'm okay."

"Dear… Talk to me. It's alright. Our talk today was a big one. I hope your heart is at ease." He closed the span between us and pulled me into his arms. "You're the love of my life. Everything will fall into place. Why don't we go out to a romantic lunch tomorrow? How does that sound?"

"Oh, baby. I'd love to, but I forgot to tell you, Mark asked me to lunch."

"Mark? What for?" Logan peered down at me.

"He said he wanted to discuss my future with the company."

Logan chuckled. "He doesn't have the power to promote you further, so I don't understand why he'd be asking you to lunch for that purpose."

I stepped back. "What does that mean? You know as well as anyone, he's up next for partner. He might not be able to offer me a promotion now, but when he's partner he could."

"Hm… Well, if you think it's best," Logan replied.

"Logan, what's up? Does it bother you that I'm having lunch with Mark?"

He opened the oven to check the roast before he answered. "It does. I've noticed a shift in him since he found out about us. He's been curt with me, but it seems with you, he's become all the friendlier. Now, this?"

"So, you think this is some ruse to take me out to lunch alone? To what end?"

"I don't know. It's suspect, is all I'm saying."

I scowled. I wasn't happy Logan was pointing out suspicions I already had. Mark's behavior had changed towards me, it wasn't only my imagination. But I refused to believe Mark would lie to me about his reasons for asking me out to lunch.

"It's fine. He's always been respectful and there's no reason to believe he'd be lying to me."

"Okay, Maya. But I swear to you, if he tries anything with you, I'll murder him," Logan replied with full sincerity.

I giggled and replied, "Logan! You couldn't possibly be jealous of Mark. Do you think I'd go for him?"

"I know it seems because I share you with Eric that I'm not the jealous type, but I'm quite possessive. And I've never loved anyone the way I love you, Maya. I've never seen my future so clearly with anyone else."

My heart melted into a puddle, and I pulled him into a deep kiss before we heard keys jingle at the front door.

Eric walked into the kitchen and said, "Hey! Smells great in here. You guys didn't have to cook. We could have ordered take-out."

He strolled over and kissed me.

"Maya is having lunch with Mark tomorrow," Logan informed him.

"Yeah? What's the occasion?"

"He says he wants to discuss her future, but I don't buy it. He's changed since finding out she and I are together," Logan replied.

Eric cocked an eyebrow and asked,
